20 HURT as protestors clash with police

KOLKATA, Feb. 9: More than 20 people, including four policemen, were injured in a clash that broke out when police tried to clear Lenin Sarani where Muslim agitators had put up a road block for four hours in protest against an article published in The Statesman a few days ago. Forty-four people were later arrested in connection with the attack on police and blocking traffic, said Mr Pradip Chattopadhyay, joint CP (administration).
According to police, trouble broke out around noon when the agitators tried to block CR Avenue in protest against an article ~ a comment piece ~ from The Independent that was published in The Statesman in its 5 February edition. Police chased away the mob and arrested seven people.
The agitators regrouped and blocked Lenin Sarani throwing traffic out of gear. They demonstrated in front of Statesman House and damaged a taxi, two private buses, and a tram. Commuters complained of being severely inconvenienced due to the roadblock. Some protestors forced local traders to shut down their shops and join the agitation. Long queues of vehicles were seen on either side of CR Avenue, Dorina Crossing, SN Banerjee Road due to suspension of traffic on Lenin Sarani.
Senior police officers, led by additional commissioner (I) Mr Ranjit Kumar Pachnanda, rushed to the spot and appealed to the agitators time and again to withdraw the blockade. After agitators refused to call off the blockade, additional forces were deployed in the area. Later DC DD (I), Mr Jawed Shamim, DC (Central) Mrs Damayanti Sen, DC (Traffic) Mr Dilip Banerjee, Joint CP (Traffic) Mr Ranvir Kumar reached the spot and urged agitators to call off the blockade.
After all their pleas fell on deaf ears, leaders from some Muslim organisations and even imams of Shahi Tipu Sultan Mosque came to the spot and tried to pacify the mob. Meanwhile, Rapid Action Force and Armed Police jawans were deployed to prevent any further violence.
After several requests of police officers and religious leaders to call off the blockade went unheeded, police chased away the mob and resorted to a mild lathi-charge to clear Lenin Sarani. Demonstrators threw stones, soda bottles and shoes injuring four cops. Some agitators later took shelter in a nearby mosque and threw stones, empty bottles and shoes targeting policemen. These people later left the mosque. The situation came under control around 5 p.m. A police picket was posted near the mosque. Later in the evening, a group of people belonging to some Muslim outfits blocked AJC Bose Road near Rajabazar for one-and-a-half hours on the same issue. The blockade was later withdrawn. In a Press release, the Indian Union Muslim Leage (West Bengal) condemned the lathi-charge on protestors and accused The Statesman of “obstinacy” with regard to issuing an apology for carrying the comment piece by Johann Hari. (In fact, The Statesman has, already expressed its deep regret if the publication of the article had caused hurt to any community or religion.)
Pamphlets call for agitation
Later in the evening, unsigned pamphlets and posters were being distributed in the Esplanade area urging members of a particular community to “continue the agitation” and stating that the “protests were not against the state government or police administration”. The pamphlets also demanded that The Statesman be “banned” and that its editor be “arrested”.
Editor held, granted bail
KOLKATA, Feb. 11: Mr Ravindra Kumar, Editor, The Statesman, and Mr Anand Sinha, Printer & Publisher, were arrested today on a complaint by a resident of Eliot Lane, Kolkata, and charged under Sections 295A (deliberate act with malicious intent to outrage religious feelings) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
They were produced before the chief metropolitan magistrate Mr SS Anand, who granted them bail. The arrests were in connection with the publication of an article by Johann Hari of The Independent of London by The Statesman in its issue of 5 February.
Upon learning that a case had been registered by Kolkata Police, The Statesman contacted senior officers and offered to assist its investigation, and to aid efforts to defuse tensions in the city. Following this, the arrests were made early today.
The city has been rocked by protests and violence since 7 February. The protesters had demanded the immediate arrest of the Editor. SNS.

Then why do you stay here? Coz you want to go against anything thats related to Hinduism. There are many Christian sites, you can post about your religion there. Why keep coming back here? I am not setting any double standards. I accept there has been problems in the church. I have accepted it before too. But we must see everything is the true historical perspective. Thats the greatness with Jesus Christ’s teaching.. As a true Christian , a German Christian feels guilt for being a mute spectator for Hitlers genocide.. Even the grand childrens feels the same, instead of blaming it on grandpa’s karms..

I know very well that everything that you write is factual and true. But these idiot Muslims, Xtians, Commies, Sonia’s agents and pseudo secular Hindus will never agree with us and will go on arguing with us with the aim of wasting our time, demotivating us and threatening us.
Why can we not have a TV channel of our own ? What is the big deal in having a TV Channel?. THere are so many big Hindu Business leaders and rich & wealthy industrialists in India. We need a TV channel that doesn’t omit pertinent facts from a story because the people in charge are more concerned about “sensational headlines”.
We need a TV channel that will hire reporters who will stick to “just the facts,” and not waste our time with endless speculation as to why something has happened, and what may happen next as a result of it.
We need a TV channel that will exhibit a righteous disrespect for the “mainstream” news media, and devote an appropriate amount of its broadcasting time to the repudiation of false claims made by other news agencies.
We need a TV channel that doesn’t slip misleading statements like “after the Godra attacks, Muslims were often targeted for violence into its communal violence-related news coverage”, for no apparent reason but to imply that they were the only victims of the horrible incident.
We need a TV channel that doesn’t try to make us feel guilty for being a Hindu and won’t shy away from using words like anti-Hindu to describe certain people.
We need a TV channel that doesn’t simply admit its past mistakes, but announces them at the start of every applicable broadcast, assigning them the same level of importance as any top news story.
We need a TV channel that puts the best interests of India first and doesn’t behave as if the unwritten rules of respectable journalism prohibit it from being patriotic.
We need a TV channel that doesn’t give a damn what other networks are reporting at any given time.
In essence…
We need a TV channel that’s more competent and truthful than it is “fair and balanced,” and anyone who can’t appreciate that deserves to be misinformed. If fairness is what you’re after, I suggest you go play chess with your grandmother, and when you feel the need for balance in your life, try ordering a salad with your dinner.

New Delhi The golden run of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ at the Oscars and A R Rahman’s double win brought smiles on the face of ailing former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who watched the awards at the AIIMS’ ICU and even gestured to the staff to have a look at the television.
“He pointed towards the television when Rahman went on stage to receive the award and there was a broad smile on his cherubic face,” said an attending doctor requesting anonymity.
The doctor said 84-year-old Vajpayee’s eyes were glued to the television when Rahman crooned ‘Jai ho’ and ‘O saya’ on the Kodak Theater stage.
“He could not speak because of tracheotomy but his excitement was visible when he signalled me to come and look at the screen as the award was given to Rahman. He even gestured to all the staff present in the ICU to have a look at the television,” he said.
The veteran leader has shown immense improvement since he was admitted at AIIMS following complaints of chest infection which was later diagnosed to be pneumonia. He underwent tracheotomy on February 13 to ease the respiration process and avoid any infection.
Vajpayee continues to remain stable but doctors have advised to keep him in ICU till he starts taking solid food. He has been fed through pipes as the “tracheotomy” tube does not allow him to take food orally.
“It is medical rule that the tracheotomy tube is kept for three weeks. He is now able to sit and somebody reads out the newspapers to him. He also listens to old film music and watches television as well,” the doctor said.
“We have kept TV, music system in the ICU and made all the permissible arrangements which suit his interest. He is recovering well. The chest infection has also been resolved,” said Sampath Kumar, head of CTVS centre and one of the treating doctors.
