FOUR TYPES OF MEN — My speech at the Workshop on Violence at St. Aloysius
Respected Elders and my dear friends,
First of all, I must thank you for inviting me to this Workshop on “Spread of Violence in the society”.
I am very happy to spend my time with you and also feel honoured that you have considered me worth your time.
Before speaking on the topic, I must say that I am a very blunt person who prefers to call a spade a spade. So if anybody is offended by the speech that I am going to give, I am tendering an unconditional advance apology. Sorry in advance… because I believe in speaking the naked truth. I am not a diplomat.
Now regarding this topic – Spread of Violence in the society – I must say that this is a vague topic.
First of all, violence is a relative term. Let me just elaborate.
I am a vegetarian Brahmin and for me non-vegetarianism is violence.
But for a non-vegetarian, killing animals is par for the course. It’s alright.
Similarly, Indian law considers killing human beings an act punishable by death. But for a Cannibal, killing human beings comes naturally.
So what is violence and what is not depends on who you are.
So – just for the sake of ideology, I have divided humanity into five parts —
There are those who follow Islam – almost a billion adherent.
There are those who follow Christianity – almost another billion adherent.
There are those who are sold on Communist philosophy – I don’t know the exact number.
Then there are Hindus like me. There are the capitalists. There are the Jews.
So there are broadly 6 lobbies in the world today –
1. Islamic lobby
2. Christian lobby
3. Left-liberal lobby
4. US-Capitalist lobby
5. Jewish lobby
6. Hindu lobby.
As for me, I am a staunch Hindu. Let me make my position very clear.
For all the six schools of thoughts, the perception of violence and non-violence difference. Even among these schools of thoughts, there are different sub-sects.
There are 72 sects in Islam. There are n number of denominations in Christianity. Among the leftists, there are number of colour – red-pink-blue. Even in the US, there are different groups. Even among Hindus, there are number of variant adherents.
My basic point is this: Violence and non-violence are not concrete terms. They differ from person to person.
It is not that violence is ugly. Violence can be very beautiful too. For instance, if you see Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan, you really get inspired by them. The way they move their hands and legs, the grace in their punch and the kick. The way soldiers do their marchpast. I myself am a student of martial arts. I have always had a passion for all these violent sports – although I have aesthetic sensibilities.
Karate, Tai-Chi, Kick boxing – all these are really entertaining sports for me. It really keeps you fit.
So how do you differentiate between violence and non-violence?
Here I am reminded about the German mystic George Gurdieff who lived during the second world war.
Gurdeiff said that the entire humanity can be clubbed into 4 types:
1. Survival Type: He is only interested in eating, drinking and mating. The animalish man. Let us admit it. All of us have this tendency – survival and reproduction. Even animals survive and reproduce. Even we do. This is a basic.
2. Logical type: The logical man thinks. He reasons. He is curious. He wants to know the secrets of the universe. He wonders: “Who am I? Where am I going? What is this creation? Why am I here? What is the basic psychology”. Gurdeiff says that the logical man is superior to the survival type man.
3. Emotional Type: He emotes. He has sentiments. He has love. Now this emotional type of man is superior to the logical type. Because this person knows love. He is an evolved person. If you see, there are some wise old men in our families. They are very matured and loving. Here I want to differentiate between lust and love. Love is the flowering of lust. Lust is basic. Love is advanced.
THE FOURTH TYPE: Then there is something called as the fourth type. Gurdeiff said that there is a fourth type in humanity – and he is the one who has transcended both logic and emotion. He is one with nature. He is not in duality. He is a very clear person. The fourth type is the most matured in humanity. Somebody like Buddha. You can categorise them into messaiah category or saints or anything you want.
The transcendence of basic instincts converts man into God.
The Sanskrit terminology is very apt. It says that the evolution is from Vanara to Nara to Narayana. Vanara means sub-human or animal, Nara means man. Narayana or God is the evolution of man into a Superman.
Ahimsa is not the suppression of violence. Ahimsa is the transcendence of violence. It is the transcendence of your basic instincts. In all our traditions, the wise old man is very much respected. Everybody bows to them. Why? Because the belief (at least the belief is that) the wise old man has transcended the basic instincts of sex and violence.
Sex and violence is animalish. It is true that we have it. Because man is a mix of divine and animalish nature. We do need violence to protect ourselves. We do need sex to continue the human race. But the fact is also that we should transcend it. And in all our traditions, he is the wise man who has transcended both sex and violence –the Brahmachari who is rooted in Ahimsa – that’s our ideal.

Deepak I am happy that you followed my way atlast.
So you remove all your vulgar postings and comments in this site and post some good things which will be help ful for the SECULAR Society.
But the problem is, If you started removing the vulgar postings & comments THEN YOUR SITE BECOMES EMPTY AND YOU WILL BECOME A NEW BORN BABY WITH OUT ANY HATRED.

First of all who invited you to the discussion and secondly who let you speak on that forum is not only silly but also should be treated as a joke. But by the way you seem beeming with pride for your speech let me take the heck out of your ideocracy .
1. Apology before committing murder.
If Amitabh did confession before before bashing up goons would be entertaining but in real life such a mentality exposes sick mind and nothing more.
2. You must ahve read somewhere that “little knowledge is dangerous thing”. Just by munching and copying some of intellecual thoughts wont make you a space scientist but exposes your ignorance.
3. Justifying violence terming it a relative subject would be ok only if you live in the forest where there is the survival of the fittest but a sure NO in a civilized society.

Realiy: Every person is a mixture of differnt types feelings and being violent is one’s reaction to circumstnces and situations. Some react wisely an controlled and some react violently. But here the psychology of the person plays important role than the person himself. If one is not able to control his emotions then he needs to learn to do so if he lives in a civilized society.
2. DOGMA 2-violence can be beautiful.
Violence can be beautiful if ones’ mind is sick. If the mind waits for the destruction of the enemy then only it can enjoy the violence. Here MIND and MINDSET of the person can be guaged what is hidden in his mind.

Realty: THIS IS CALLED DOUBLE SPEAK OR HYPOCRACY. ONE SIDE HE IS CALLING VIOLELENCE IS NECESSARY AND THE OTHER SIDE SAYS A WISE PERSON IS ONE WHO HAS TRANSCENDED SEX PLUS VIOLENCE. sO WHEN ONE BECOMES VIOLENT YOU CAN SAY THAT WAS NECEASSARY AND OTHERWISE HE IS TRUE BRAHMACHARI.

We need to get out of this petty politics and using religion to spread violence and political gain. In this world you will find the people who try to create vicious atmosphere with the backing of karnataka home-minister (who is a well known bhajrangi). They think they are the champions of hinduism but in reality they are making our faith small.
Congratulation hindujagruti for your wise comment. this will be deleted with in no time because whenever something is written about v.s acharya it is deleted because this guy needs to keep his boss happy u know.
